…To offer counseling sessions for traumatised students

The Lagos State Government has sympathised with parents and students over the accident that occurred in the Ojodu axis of the state, noting that two students were confirmed dead on the spot, while the remaining 12 students; seven females and five males were recuperating having sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The State Government says it will be responsible for the medical expenses of all these students.

The Government also confirmed that some students who had slight injuries had been discharged.

According to a statement released by the state's ministry of education, it reads, "the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babjide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, commiserates with the parents who lost their children in the incident. He understands that this is a difficult time for them, praying that the Lord will comfort them. He empathises with the parents and guardians of other students in the State Health facilities, assuring them of the best medical attention.

"On behalf of the Governor, Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo at the Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Grammar School, Ojodu, described the incident as quite unfortunate and devastating. Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo has visited the medical centers where the students were being treated and they are in stable condition."

The statement further states that other officials of the state who have also visited the students at the various health centers from last night till this moment, include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji; Directors of the Ministry, District, Quality Assurance Officials and School Management.

Students of the schools have been asked to stay at home until school resumption in January 2022. In the meantime, arrangements are being made for trauma counseling sessions for students and teachers in person and via helplines.

Mrs. Adefisayo says, “We are working with professional counselors and trauma experts to support us in helping students and teachers pass through this challenging time."

Other State Officials who visited the school include Member, State House of Assembly representing Ikeja II, Hon. Adedamola Kasunmu; Ojodu LCDA Executive Chairman, Mr. David Olusegun Odunmbaku; Representative of the Chairman, National Union of Teachers, Lagos State Chapter; Comrade Alase Sakirudeen Adekunle and Representatives of the Parents Forum of the affected schools.
