Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez wanted to explore the chances of China mediating in the Ukraine war during a visit to Beijing at the end of the month.

Presidential Minister, Félix Bolaños said on Thursday on the RTVE television channel.

Beijing could play a very important role in mediating between Kyiv and Moscow, Bolaños said.

“It is imperative to end this conflict, and Russia must recognise that this is a totally unjustified aggression,’’ he added.

Beijing recently presented a peace initiative, which called for a ceasefire but does not demand the withdrawal of Russian forces.

It was warmly received by Putin but met with criticism among Western powers.

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Moscow earlier this week and signed a strategic cooperation agreement.

Nothing was disclosed about contacts with the leadership in Kyiv.

Sánchez would be in Beijing on March 30 and 31.

Spain holds the presidency of the EU in the second half of the year.
