The Presidency said none of Nigeria’s 36 states has its authorization to procure weapons for their security outfits.
It said only the Office of the National Security Adviser can issue such authorization upon proper clearance by the President and Commander-in-Chief and as it is at the moment, no such approvals have been issued to any state government.
A statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled “No state has approval or authorization for automatic weapons,” noted that any non-state actor in possession of an AK-47 assault rifle or any other automatic weapon must surrender them.
Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, had earlier faulted the Presidency for allegedly approving weapons for the Katsina State Security Outfit while the Amotekun Corps in his state was denied such opportunity.
Other stakeholders have since joined the governor in faulting the government.
