The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said it will monitor political parties’ campaigns and expenses and pay special attention to the observance of limits on party and candidate finance for the 2023 general elections to ensure compliance with the laws.

The Electoral Law mandates candidates and parties to submit to INEC their audited financial reports, capturing revenue inflows and outflows after a general election and at specific periods in the year.

Section 88 of the Electoral Act provides that the maximum election expenses to be incurred by a candidate at a presidential election shall not exceed N5billion.

The maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate in respect of governorship election shall not exceed N1billion while Section 88 (8)  provides that No individual or other entity shall donate to a candidate more than N50million.

INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu urged political parties and candidates to carefully study the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and familiarize themselves with their obligations as well as the penalties under the law.
