The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) says it is going to set up an Accelerated Data Protection Remediation unit during its annual National Data Privacy Week to address petitions from data subjects.

Mr. Babatunde Bamigboye, Head, of Legal Enforcement and Regulations of the Bureau in a statement issued in Abuja, said it will be part of other activities to celebrate the week.

Data Privacy Week is an annual global campaign that aims at educating individuals and businesses about the importance of online privacy.

Bamigboye said that Nigeria would on Jan. 28 join the international community to observe Global Data Privacy Day 2023.

“It is a day that has been set aside to create awareness of fundamental rights and freedoms relating to the privacy of citizens in the data processing ecosystem.

“In line with the overarching global objective of awareness of data privacy, the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), will be organizing a National Privacy Week.

“The week is a week of intensive focus on awareness creation in the area of data subjects’ rights, capacity building on data governance, and data breach remediation among others.

“The NDPB under the leadership of Dr. Vincent Olatunji as its National Commission will set up an Accelerated Data Breach Remediation unit to resolve petitions from data subjects within the National Privacy Week,” he said.

Bamigboye added that Prof. Isa Pantami, Minister of Communications would inaugurate the National Privacy Week with a press briefing on Global Data Privacy Day.

According to him, National Privacy Week also coincides with the one-year anniversary of the establishment of the Bureau.

The week-long program to mark the event is expected to hold from Jan. 28 through Feb. 4.
