Workers of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission have staged a protest against the Chairman, Prof. Larry Chukwu and the Commissioners, pleading with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu' to deliver them from modern day slavery.
The workers who turned out in their large number for the protest expressed their disgust and dissatisfaction towards the leadership pattern of the Chairman which they maintained is detrimental to their well-being.
According to a statement signed by the workers spokesperson, Macham Jang made available to our correspondent, they noted there has been no visible performance or improvement in the Commission since year 2020 that they came to the office.
"Since this Commission was inaugurated in June, 2020, there is no achievements to show for over 3 years now. Instead most of the time they only deliberate on allowances and payments to themselves. The Chairman and Commissioners spend time fighting themselves than give attention to Law Reform activities. More than 80% of monthly overhead that the Commission received is utilized to pay their personal allowances and refunds. Staff claims have been abandoned. The Hon. Minister should request for minutes of their meetings to see for himself the level of decay the Chairman and Commissioners have brought to the Commission.
"This Commission categorically stated that the PSR and Financial Regulations do not apply to them. They pay allowances to themselves that are already captured and are being paid in their salary package This Commission suspended a staff for 6 months without pay just for not being in the office for 3 days even after informing the Hon. Chairman verbally before the staff travelled for a family emergency. Even the suspension did not follow due process. This Commission is in the process of sacking a staff for flimsy reasons and without due process. The staff who have just 2 months left to retirement from service after 35 years of meritorious service in the Commission.
To this end, the workers made these demands to President Bola Tinubu, "In the light of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of the President and Commander-in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members of staff of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission want to “Breathe” again and therefore request The Honorable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and Mr. President to immediately Remove the Chairman and Commissioners from office and Replace them accordingly," they stated.
