Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has advised Christians to imbibe the virtues of love, compassion and forgiveness as they begin their annual fasting ritual today.
Besides, the Governor has admonished the Christian faithful, particularly those in Imo State, to spare a thought during the period of the lent, to reflect sincerely on their lives, the society, their relationship with God and fellow beings, respect for each other, among others.
Governor Uzodimma gave the advice on his social media handle as the 40 days Lenten period commences just as he enjoins Imo people to embrace love in the spirit of the celebration of St. Valentine's Day, also marked Wednesday globally.
On lent, he wrote: "As we begin the Lenten period, a time for spiritual renewal and growth, with the solemn observation of the Ash Wednesday, let us strive in promoting harmony and peace in our society by embodying the virtues of love, compassion and forgiveness.
"During this Lenten season, I urge each and every one of us to engage in sincere reflection, to mend broken relationships and to strive for personal growth. Let us use this time to strengthen our bonds with our fellow citizens and to foster a culture of understanding and respect.
"May we be guided by the wisdom and grace of the Almighty. Let us pray for His guidance and blessings as we seek to better ourselves and our communities during this sacred time."
Christians all over the world marked the 2024 Ash Wednesday on February 14 and effectively commenced their 40 days fasting.
In the spirit of St. Valentine's Day celebration, Governor Uzodimma prayed that love should envelop all the nooks and crannies of Imo State, while urging the people to make love their guiding light in all they do.
Again, his words: "As we commemorate the feast of St. Valentine's, I send heartfelt wishes for love to envelop every corner of our darling Imo State. Let us allow love to be our guiding light in all our interactions, fostering harmony and unity among us.
"There's a profound truth in the words, 'Where there is love, there is peace.' It is within this atmosphere of peace that development flourishes, aligning perfectly with our shared vision for a transformed Imo State.
"Let us continue to live as examples of love, embracing one another with kindness and understanding. Together, let's build a future filled with love, progress and prosperity for all.
"Happy Valentine's Day ndi Imo, ndi oma."
It should be noted that this year's Ash Wednesday also coincided with the global St. Valentine's Day celebration.
