The pensioners stormed commercial banks on Wednesday claimed that their Bank Accounts were credited by the State government, ahead of Friday 29th March and Monday 1st April Easter public holidays declared by the federal government.
They alleged that those who either made part or full withdrawal of the amount from their Bank Accounts were allegedly placed on restriction, while those who were yet-to make withdrawal the money from their Accounts, were debited the same amount they earlier received as debits from their Account.
The angry senior citizens stormed Banking with Guarantee Trust Bank, Plc, Sapele Road Branch in Benin City, and accosted the Management of the Bank to explain reasons for the illegal deductions of their entitlements.
One of the beneficiaries of the entitlement, who gave her name as ‘Esther’, said a senior Accountant in the State Ministry of Finance had assured those affected that there is no cause for alarm.
The presence of the senior citizens, was noticed at the banking hall on Wednesday morning.
She said, “We, praying for the Governor immediately we received alerts, but we are shocked to discover that they gave use with one hand and use the other hand to take it away.
“Some of use have started spending the money, unknown to us that our bank accounts had been placed on restriction. What kind of problem is this?”, she queried.
A top government official hinted that only pensioners whose Accounts were debited twice instead of once, had restrictions on their bank accounts.
“Technical glitches caused the discrepancy in the payment system. Immediately it was detected by the government, of course you won’t expect the government not to act”.
