The National President of the Niger Delta Youth Council of Nigeria (NDYCN), Amb. Adogbeji Blessing, has emphasised the need for the Federal Government to intervene decisively on behalf of majority of Nigerians to enforce price control mechanism that protects citizens from exploitation as captured under the Price Control Act.
For weeks now the Naira has been appreciating against the dollar, but the cost of goods and services have remained unchanged. According to Amb. Blessing, the price control act should be fully implemented by the federal government as this will guarantee that the economy is not concentrated in the hands of a few.
According to him, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu - President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had promised during his campaign the abundance of food but the current reality speaks otherwise.
It is for this reason that Amb. Blessing is calling on the Federal Government to enforce the Price Control Act to control the prices of essential commodities so that Nigerians will not be subjected to unnecessary hunger.
The current prices of Petrol and other basic food items such as bread, garri, rice, beans etc. is both alarming and disheartening in a nation where there is abundant crude oil.
"It is so bad now that the cost of food items keeps skyrocketing" Amb. Blessing said.
The NDYCN National President stated that while the affluent citizens may be able to cope with the spiraling inflation, majority of Nigerians have been priced out of accessing basic commodities, hence the urgent need for government's intervention based on existing laws.
As the Naira appreciates against the Dollar on a daily basis, we call on the Federal Government to ensure food stability by controlling price and market demands in order to provide for her teeming citizens.
