Fear in Onitsha as truckload of live bullets falls

Residents of commercial city of Onitsha Anambra State have been gripped with fear, following the fall of a truck loaded with live bullets in the area.

The incident which occurred on Sunday, May 9 saw a Mercedes Benz 911 truck fall along Awka road in the city while cartons of the bullets spilled into the drainage as it skidded off the road.

A an eye witness who spoke to newsmen said the truck fell around 5am when the driver and his conductor, after sustaining minor injuries, tried to evacuate and conceal the contents.

“But they could not do much before daybreak when some police operatives arrived the accident scene only to discover the truck was laden with a consignment of live bullets.” 

The conductor of the truck, however, took to his feet immediately the incident happened on Akwa road, multiple media sources report that the truck's conductor was able to evade arrest but the driver was apprehended. 

In the meantime there is a heavy presence of security personnel in the community amid tough surveillance since the location of the truck, a Mercedes Benz 911 model, could not be ascertained.
