Mrs. Sharon Ikeazor,, Minister of State ,Ministry of Environment, has reiterated Federal Government’s commitment to implement Climate Change actions, combat the issues of Climate Change and adapt to the consequences of Climate Change and drastically reducing Global gas emissions that will position Nigeria towards the green pathway.

Ikeazor said this at the inception workshop and official inauguration of the National Adaptation plan process ,organised by the Ministry of Environment to mark the take off of the National Adaptation process in Nigeria (NAP)in Nigeria.

The Minister, represented by Dr. Iniebiong Awe, Director, Department of Climate change in his Keynote address stated that the National Action Plan process is expected to analyse Climate information and prioritise adaptation options, also build National capacity to monitoring, reviewing and reporting on the NAP processes.

She said that the expected outcome of Nigerians NAP process will also include effective adaptation governance and co-ordination for NAP processes in Nigeria and strength it’s process.

“Nation’s are looking for solutions to the issues of Climate Change that is trying to extinct mankind , Countries worldwide have adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) framework in March, 1994.

“We recall that at the inception of this administration in 2015, the President demonstrated commitment to Climate change with a target to reduce Global gas emissions by 20 per cent confrontationally and an additional 40% with International support.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that , developing a funding strategy for the implementation of the already developed NAP processes and building National capacity to monitoring, reviewing and reporting on NAP process is one of the objectives to be achieved by the stakeholders workshop.

“NAN also reports that Nigeria’s NAP framework and other adaptation initiatives will help vulnerable groups adapt to the impact of Climate Change with minimal losses on livelihood, ecosystem and biodiversity while reducing the severe impacts of Climate Change.

“This will also reduce vulnerability and facilitate Climate Change adaptation, building adaptive paucity and resilience.

Mr Hassan Musa,The Permanent Secretary, represented by Hajia Halima Bawa-Bwari in his remarks,noted that Nigeria has obtained a readiness support from the Green Climate Fund(GCF) with UNEC,as the delivery partner to advance the NAP process in Nigeria.

“The purpose of this gathering is to introduce the process to you and intimate you of your roles in the delivery process.

“I encourage participants to come up with various adaptation options that may be deployed towards adaptation planning in Nigeria.

“I will like to appreciate the GCF for the support given Nigeria through the Ministry,” he added.

He called on stakeholders present at the workshop to make meaningful contributions for a successful outing.

Also Speaking at the event, Hon.Shamsuddeen Dambazau, Member representing House Committee on Climate Change said that the launch was timely and apt taking into cognisance the challenges that the impact of Climate change is causing in our Environment.

“We need to help people transition into cleaner methods to cook,we also need to see that actions are being taken to tackle the issues of desertification.

“We need to look at the carbon credits program s,the highly industrialized nation’s are the ones that create most of these emissions.they have programs that offer use opportunities to get carbon credits.to acheive a cleaner,safer environment.”he added
