Ms. Cynthia Obaseki, a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has donated sanitary pads to 100 students of the Government Day Secondary School, Gwallameji, Bauchi.
Obaseki who is serving with the Divine International Secondary School also sensitized the girls on menstrual and personal hygiene.

In his remarks, NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Namadi Abubakar, appreciated the gesture, adding that it would impart good health knowledge to the students.

Represented by Mrs. Gbemisola Salami, Assistant Director, Community Development Service (CDS), Abubakar said that the corps members were expected to make their host communities better than they met it.

He urged the students to step down the training to their peers and use what they learned to promote healthy living in society.

Abubakar said the CDS project was one of the cardinal programmes of the scheme and urged other corps members to emulate the gesture.

According to him, the scheme is encouraging corps members to initiate projects of their choice to enable them to make a positive impact on the lives of the people in the host communities.

Earlier, Obaseki said the gesture was borne out of her passion to contribute positively to the lives of young girls.

“When I came to Bauchi, I looked around to see where I could come in as a corps member and make an impact.

“I don’t believe in the society just only giving me, I believe in trying to make an impact in the society too.

“The way young girls are living without knowing the true meaning of personal hygiene and even when they are seeing their menstruation, they feel disgusted about it.

“The project is to encourage them to feel good about their personalities as females by teaching them how they can take care of themselves during or after menstruation and how to properly use sanitary pads,” she said.

On his part, the Principal of the school, Mr. Shehu Balteh, lauded the gesture and urged the students to put into practice what they learned to improve their health condition.
