Trump backs Nigeria Twitter ban, urge other countries to follow suit
President Muhammadu Buhari with Former President Donald Trump

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday applauded Nigeria's Twitter ban and called on other countries to follow suit.

Trump’s approval is coming days after Nigeria suspended Twitter indefinitely last Friday.

The Federal Government made the order a day after Twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet for 'violating' its abusive behaviour policy and several calls by Nigerians to have it taken down.

His tweet threatened punishment on secessionists in the Southeastern part of the country.

“Congratulations to the country of Nigeria, who just banned Twitter because they banned their President,” Trump said in a statement.

“More COUNTRIES should ban Twitter and Facebook for not allowing free and open speech—all voices should be heard.”

“In the meantime, competitors will emerge and take hold,” Trump continued. “Who are they to dictate good and evil if they themselves are evil?”

Trump, an avid social media user during his presidential campaign and while in office, was permanently banned by Twitter for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Facebook also kicked him off its platform, recently extended his suspension until 2023.
