Buhari arrives Maiduguri, commissions projects

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Maiduguri, Borno state capital for a one-day official visit.

The jet conveying the President landed in Air Force Base, Maiduguri, Borno State at about 10:05a.m.

The Governor of Borno, Babagana Zulum, was on ground to receive the visitors alongside all the security Service Chiefs, who had arrived in the city earlier on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, the President was driven out of the airport to the site of the newly established Vocational Training Center at Njimtilo, a community on the outskirts of Maiduguri, where he cut the tape for the commissioning of the institution.

Thereafter, he left the centre at 10:40 a.m. for the new Borno State University, where he commissioned the Senate Building.

He has also commissioned projects at Government Technical Secondary School, Njimtilo. 

According to the itinerary of the president obtained by newsmen, he is expected to visit the Shehu of Borno’s palace, address frontline troops and as well commission some projects within the state capital.

The President is also expected to proceed to Maimalari cantonment to visit wounded soldiers.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum had earlier explained that the President's visit to the state is not unconnected to his concern about the insecurity and humanitarian situation in Borno State, adding that he is sincerely committed to finding peace in Borno.

Zulum in a special broadcast to the people of the state on Wednesday said projects to be commissioned by the President include “the first phase of 10,000 houses which he generously approved and funded, for the resettlement of IDPs and Refugees.”

The Governor further noted that the President has initiated viable infrastructure development projects to fast track peace restoration and resettlement programmes for sustainable social and economic development of the state.

He listed some of the projects to include the establishment of power plant by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), designed to address epileptic electricity supply in Maiduguri and its environs.

Other projects include the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, a pioneer federal polytechnic in the state.
