Senator Joy Emordi, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sen. Emordi said her decision was based on a conviction that the future of a prosperous and united Nigeria lies in the APC.

She follows in the footsteps of another former PDP BoT member, Senator Grace Bent who had also decamped to the APC on July 12, 2021.

Chairman APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) and Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni, formally received Senator Emordi in a brief ceremony in Abuja.

She described the APC leadership as sincerely and genuinely committed to a united Nigeria that has plans for the future generation.

The 66-year old two-time Senator assured the party of her loyalty and her supporters to the party.

“l assure the party of my loyalty and support and to work for the success of the party.

“The APC led federal government is working for the South East and this is attracting more PDP members into APC.”

Reacting, Buni expressed delight with the decision taken by the ex -PDP board member to contribute to the unity of the country.

Buni further stated that the decision by Emordi and other prominent politicians from the Southeast into the APC will promote national unity.

“There is a need for us to join hands for the political stability and national unity of our dear country,” Buni said.

“The Southeast is a strong political block and very crucial to the unity of the country, this will mo doubt add to national cohesion.”

On Tuesday, PDP's National Youth leader, Sunday Ude-Okoye had said he was aware of plans by no fewer than 8 members of the party's National Working Committee were unhappy with the leadership of the party and may be following in the steps of seven other NWC members who resigned on Tuesday.

Others who had exited the party in recent times include state and federal legislators and three state governors.

Senator Emordi was the first Igbo woman to be elected Senator and had represented Anambra North between 2005 and 2010 before her election was annulled. She went on to serve in the government of then President Goodluck Jonathan as his Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters.

Meanwhile, the National Working Committee (NWC) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said it has activated internal conflict resolution mechanism of the party to ensure amicable resolution of all issues affecting the party.

The party made this known in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan on Wednesday in Abuja.

Ologbondiyan said that the party’s NWC rose from a crucial meeting where it reviewed the state of the party, with a view to creating an atmosphere that would engender stability within the party.

“The NWC assures that it has already activated the internal conflict resolution mechanism of the party to ensure amicable resolution of all issues.

“The NWC assures all members of the party that it is taking urgent steps to ensure decisions that will strengthen our great party for the task ahead.

“This is particularly at this time Nigerians are looking up to the PDP for direction and solutions,” he said.

Ologbondiyan said against the backdrop, the NWC urged all PDP members to remain calm.

He assured members that the PDP remained stable as the NWC was working to bring the party back to power in 2023.
