Silas Nwankwo scored the lone goal as Nasarawa United Football Club of Lafia beat visiting MFM FC 1-0 on Sunday in the ongoing 2020/2021 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
In the Match Day 33 fixture at the Lafia Township Stadium, Nwankwo scored for his 14th goal of the League season after a pass from Chigozie Obasi.
After receiving the pass near the centre circle, he sprinted to beat two defenders, before hitting a low shot to beat the goalkeeper in the 15th minute.
Speaking after the match, Bala Nikyu, Head Coach of Nasarawa United, said he was relieved and happy that his players were able to hold on to their early lead.
“A victory, as far as the league is concerned, is very important because the league is getting to an end and all teams are trying their best to pick the maximum points.
“So, I think it’s a good outcome for us because the most important thing is the three maximum points which have made us to retain the position are in now,” he said.
Also speaking, Gabriel Olalekan, Head Coach of MFM FC, lauded the performance of both teams, which he described as competitive.
But he rued his team’s failure to convert their scoring chances to goals.
“Both teams played a wonderful game. I think everybody that watched the game enjoyed the game.
“I think Nasarawa United played well for a while. But, in the second half, we took over the game yet we couldn’t convert our chances. However, that is football for you,” Olalekan said.
Nwankwo, on his part, told newsmen he intended to keep scoring to meet his personal target of 20 goals before the end of the season.
“Before I started scoring numerously, I said to myself that when you get the goals, confidence keeps coming and the goals will keep coming till the end of the season.
“I am still targeting 20 goals till the end of the season,” he said
