The 2022 January transfer window for Premier League, EFL and Scottish Premiership clubs closed on Monday, January 31 2022. Some high profile transfers successfully came off like Everton's signings of Dele and Donny van de Beek.

Others were the transfers of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus to Tottenham Hotspur. Arsenal saw former club captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang depart for Barcelona and Newcastle United finally signed Dan Burn.

On the flip side, PSG, Newcastle, Barcelona, Ajax and Liverpool lost the race to clinch some key signings. Timeline.ng outlines the failed moves and reasons why they hit the rocks.

Morata to Barcelona

Morata's move to Barcelona was one of the anticipated high-profile transfers that didn't come off. Morata is on loan at Juventus and had been heavily linked with a switch to the Nou Camp.

The failed move was not unconnected to Atletico Madrid's reluctance of selling their forward to strengthen a side they are competing with LaLiga.

Atleti and Barca are scrapping it out in the top four battle and they are well aware Morata will strengthen Xavi’s hand.

Lingard to Newcastle United

Jesse Lingard will see out the remainder of his contract at Manchester United after efforts made by Newcastle to sign him proved abortive. Newcastle had reportedly made an improved offer for Lingard, whilst West Ham also bid for the star - and a move away from the club seemed close.

Timeline.ng gathered that the united board decided not to sanction a transfer despite Ralf Rangnick giving Lingard his blessing to leave the club during a meeting between the interim manager and the 29-year-old on Monday.

Lingard has found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season despite starting well under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the start of the campaign. The forward is in desperate need of regular first-team football so he can play his way into Gareth Southgate's England squad ahead of this year's World Cup.

Dembele to PSG

Barcelona desperate move to offload high-earning winger Ousmane Dembele before the end of January transfer window closes didn't materialize as negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain stalled.

The problem in this deal has been PSG's Financial Fair Play situation, with the Ligue 1 club needing to sell some players to Barca in order for any operation involving Dembele to go through.

However, the players which PSG were willing to part with were not keen on a move to the Spanish side. It is somewhat a disappointing end for the 24-year-old France international who Barca was so enamoured with that they paid Borussia Dortmund £135million for his services in August 2017.

Fabio Carvalho to Liverpool

Liverpool failed to secure £8m transfer of Fulham's Fabio Carvalho despite reaching agreements with Fulham after hours of complex negotiations.

Jürgen Klopp had brought forward interest in the Portugal-born winger, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder, given the fierce competition that is expected for his signature at the end of the season.

The botched move was hinged on The Reds inability to conclude personal terms and conduct a medical with the 19-year-old before the 11pm GMT deadline.

The EFL, unlike the Premier League, does not permit ‘deal sheets’ which would allow work to be continued after the deadline has passed, and Carvalho will now see out the remainder of his contract with the Cottagers.

Bergwijn to Ajax

Steven Bergwijn will remain at Tottenham Hotspur after his deal with Ajax fell through, journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

Bergwijn, 24, has been heavily linked with a move worth £20 million back to the Eredivisie in recent weeks.

However, a move is now said to be off the cards according to Romano, citing the inability of Spurs and Ajax to ultimately reach an agreement.

The development is nonetheless good news for Spurs as they are keeping a player that can have a good impact – even from the bench if needed. The talented winger can perhaps look forward to a strong run in the squad at Spurs with more games under Conte.
