Petition Hearing: House Committee on Public Petition drills the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) over its noxious billing methods

The House of Representatives committee on public petition has lambasted the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company for not distributing electricity to some affected communities in Abia State in five years yet generated an estimated bill/debt to the tune of 2.1 billion Naira.

In the public petition presented by Hon. Osonmwa Ibe representing Arochukwu/Ohafia federal constituency of Abia state, it highlighted the continuous blackout in the affected communities and the financial dispute wherein the EEDC claimed the communities owed it a total of 2.1 billion Naira which is being challenged because the EEDC literally supplied darkness in the five years.

A member of the committee and the federal lawmaker representing Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Adesuwa Osawwru blamed the EEDC for the unwholesome acts of deceit, and institutional fraud of generating electricity bill that ran into billions of Naira within five years supplying darkness noting that this could fester because the distribution company have accomplices/culprits amongst members of the affected communities and sought to know how estimated bills could be generated from communities that have been in total blackout for half a decade. He sadly added that this can't happen in the clime the Managing Director of the company, a caucasian probably from the Middle East, hails from.

The House Committee thereafter mandated the Electricity Distribution Company to immediately restore power supply in the affected communities.

The MD of EEDC committed to ensuring that the communities get a minimum of four hours of power supply daily from its daily allocation of megawatts.

The outcome of the public petition hearing underscored Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Osawaru's commitment to effective oversight function aimed at putting MDAs, Public and Private Enterprises, Utilities companies and service providers on their toes for the benefit of Nigerians.
