The All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Lagos State Chapter, has called for the establishment of the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on food security.
AFAN Chairman, Dr Femi Oke, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
According to him, the office of the special adviser to the president on food security will add more value in food production and safeguard the agricultural sector.
Oke also noted that it would address issues relating to price hike and availability of food items in the country.
He said that the office if created, would lay more emphasise on food security as well as ensure food supply across the country.
“The office is to ensure that prices of food commodities are not increased whenever there is scarcity or shortage of supply in the country.

“Farmers must form part of the office so as to provide professional and technical support to the office.
“In another few years, if care is not taken, we are going to have food crisis,” Oke said.
The AFAN chairman lamented that many farmers could not go to their farm due to the fear of being attacked or kidnapped.
He noted that climate change has posed serious threat to food production, appealing to government to support farmers with irrigation system.
“With the present situation of insecurity, dollar rate and climate change, there is no way the price of food will not continue to go up.
“But government at all levels need to work closely with farmers and support them with seedlings, equipment and funds to address some of these challenges and boost production,” he said.
