Delta State Orientation Bureau, DSOB, has commended the federal government over the recent ban on Nigerian movies showcasing money rituals, smoking and other social vices which hitherto characterised Nollywood movies in Nigeria.
Chief Executive Officer of the Bureau, Dr. Latimore Oghenesivbe, made the commendation on Wednesday in Lagos, while speaking to newsmen on DSOB's planned sensitisation campaigns against moral decadence and dishonesty, saying that money ritual and social vices scenes in movies contributed significantly to the incessant wave of criminality and moral decay in society.
He noted that majority of Nigeria movies are centered around money rituals or other get-rich-quick story lines that has consistently infringed on our moral values, good conscience and hard work, adding that the ban of such movies showcasing social vices would help in no small measures in reversing the ugly trend, and to chart a new course of action towards a sane and productive society.
He commended the Director-General of Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, for championing the reform process leading to the ban by the federal government, while urging him not to rest on his oars.
"Delta State Orientation Bureau is in total support of the ban on money rituals and social vices scenes in Nigerian movies. Such movies, no doubt, sends negative signals to our youths and adults, some of whom are now involved in ritual killings for money.
"Smoking in movies also sends wrong signals to our youths, as can be seen from the increased number of young boys and girls involved in smoking and use of other illicit drugs.
"Nigerian movies script writers, producers and production managers must of a necessity focus on stories that would enhance and promote hard work, patriotism, honesty, moral values, good conscience and peaceful coexistence, among others.
"Society is crashing due to western cultural influences, as well as the get-rich-quick syndrome without corresponding hard work or positive efforts. This has to stop.
"All hands must be on deck to rebuild a new Nigeria, where integrity, moral values and patriotism flows from top to bottom", Oghenesivbe said.
