Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has appealed for calm following reports of Saturday’s attacks on the people of Igangan, in Ibarapa Local Government Area of the state.
Makinde, in a statement issued in Ibadan, on Sunday, said he received the shocking news of the attacks on residents of the community in the early hours of Sunday.
He appealed for calm, adding that security operatives have been deployed to take control of the area.
According to him, investigation was ongoing and that an update on the incident would be made available later.
Igangan, a southern Oyo town that shot to prominence amid Yoruba-Fulani tensions early this year, came under a night attack, leaving several persons dead and properties razed.
The attack came days after Governor Makinde visited the area and held a town hall meeting with members of the community.
Several vehicles and buildings including the palace of the Asigangan of Igangan town and a filling station were also burnt down by the gunmen.
Spokesman of the state's police command Wale Osifeso, said the assailants attacked the area with dangerous weapons but a combined team of the police, hunters and vigilantes were able to beat back the criminals.
