Dr. Kashim Akor

The race for the Kogi East Senatorial seat took a decisive turn this week as Dr. Kashim Yunusa Akor, the Omachi Attah Igala, formally declared his intention to contest in the 2027 general elections under the All Progressives Congress.

Dr. Akor’s declaration comes at a critical political crossroads for the district, as stakeholders move to reinforce long-standing rotational agreements and demand a shift toward merit-based representation.

Answering the Call: A Legacy of Impact

Addressing a diverse gathering of elders, youths, and professionals from the Igala/Bassa land through his declaraton message, Dr. Akor described his candidacy not as an act of personal ambition, but as a "humble response" to years of persistent appeals from his kinsmen.

"I have heard your voices in our marketplaces and in moments of concern," Dr. Akor stated. "Leadership is not defined by promises made during campaigns, but by lives touched and communities transformed. It is about service before office, and impact before position."

Unlike the typical political rollout, Akor’s declaration leaned heavily on a pre-existing track record. Even as a civil servant, he has been a silent architect of development in the region, spearheading solar electrification projects, providing instructional materials for schools, and driving youth enterprise support, efforts he describes as "responsibility, not for recognition."

The Equity Factor: Rejection of the "Third-Term"

Dr. Akor’s entry into the race coincides with a firm stance taken by the Kogi East Elders Forum. Led by Elder Simon Ocheje, the Forum recently issued a strongly worded statement rejecting any "third-term agenda" in the district.

The elders reaffirmed that the established benchmark for representation in Kogi East is eight years (two terms), citing the precedents set by former Senators Nicholas Ugbane and Atai Aidoko Ali. With the incumbent Senator, Jibrin Isah (Echocho), currently serving his second term, the Forum insisted that equity demands the seat rotate to ensure political balance.

The Forum specifically noted that Dekina Local Government has already enjoyed sixteen years of senatorial representation across two different tenures, arguing that justice requires other areas within the district be given the opportunity to lead in 2027.

Strategic Consultations and Party Unity

In a move signaling high-level strategic alignment, Dr. Akor recently paid a courtesy visit to the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, CON.

During the visit, the former Governor acknowledged Akor’s long-standing dedication to the state, noting that his contributions as a technocrat have not gone unnoticed. Insiders suggest that Akor’s blend of grassroots connection and professional administrative experience positions the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a "strong and decisive victory" by offering a candidate who satisfies both the elders' demand for equity and the youth's demand for modern, transparent leadership.

A Vision for the Future

Dr. Akor’s "New Direction" for Kogi East is built on four key pillars:

  • Human Capital: Investing in education and entrepreneurship for the youth.

  • Federal Synergy: Connecting the district to national opportunities for infrastructure and jobs.

  • Accountability: Ensuring value for every public resource.

  • Inclusive Growth: Strengthening the hands of farmers and women.

"I come before you not as a perfect man, but as a willing servant," Akor concluded. "Together, we can rewrite our story and build a Kogi East that works for all."

As the 2027 cycle begins to take shape, Dr. Akor’s candidacy appears to be gaining momentum as the bridge between the district’s cherished political traditions and its aspirations for sustainable progress
